Skowhegan Savings Named Third Best Place to Work in Maine
SKOWHEGAN, Maine - Skowhegan Savings has been awarded the Best Places to Work title by the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) - Maine State Council and Best Companies Group. The bank ranked third among 40 other Maine businesses on the list. This year marks the third consecutive year the bank has been named to the list. Based in Skowhegan and with 114 employees, Skowhegan Savings operates ten branches located in Kennebec, Somerset and Penobscot Counties.

"It's an honor to be recognized as the third best business in the state on this list of other distinguished companies," said John Witherspoon, president and CEO of Skowhegan Savings. "This recognition is a testament that our employees are committed to developing a service culture where we put customers and the community first every day, and to also create a friendly and eager internal culture that makes working at Skowhegan Savings a fulfilling career choice."
In 2008, Skowhegan Savings implemented a continued Integrity Service program, geared towards strengthening and encouraging communication with an open-door policy among employees, customers and each other. Since the start of the program, Skowhegan Savings has been named one of the Best Places to Work three years in a row.
Another way the bank has shown their appreciation for their employees and the surrounding community has been initiating various "dress down" days -- employees pay to dress casually and proceeds are donated to a local cause or charity.
Skowhegan Savings supports employees and professional development by promoting from within whenever appropriate. In September, Jack Ducharme, who has been employed with the bank since 2000, was promoted to Branch Manager of the Madison and Norridgewock offices. During his tenure at Skowhegan Savings thus far, Ducharme has filled a variety of roles including Commercial Loan Officer, Floating Branch Manager, Indirect Loan Manager and Loan Servicing Manager.
"I enjoy working for a place that is instrumental in the community and with achieving customers' financial goals," said Ducharme. "It is extremely satisfying to come to work each day knowing you will help someone out, in some way, throughout the course of the day."
Best Places to Work is a two-part process for companies across Maine that choose to enter the program from which the Best Places to Work distinctions are named. This involves evaluation of workplace policies, procedures and demographics, as well as an employee-experience survey comprising 75 percent of the company's overall score.
